These aquatic superstars have been thin on the ground (water?) in the present century. Were they all delusionary? Have they become extinct? Or could it be that modern ships don't rely on human lookouts as much as their Victorian counterparts? Whatever the explanation, it's hard to dismiss the accounts in this fascinating article.
